The Normans were VIKINGS, or Norse, who settled in western France in the 9th and early 10th centuries. In 911, the weak French monarchy under the Carolingian CHARLES III (The Simple), granted the lands at the estuary of the Seine River to Rollo, known as Rolf the Ganger"(860? to 931?), a Norwegian Viking, and his Danish followers in return for an alliance against other Vikings, thus laying the foundation for the duchy of NORMANDY.
Rollo was a Viking who raided the coast of France each year (c.890-910) until Charles III gave him his daughter, Gisella, in marriage and all the land that became Normandie. Hence Rollo was the first Duke of Normandie.
Rollo had been outlawed by Harald Fairhair and this forced him to settle in Normandie.
Rollo, the Viking, was granted land in Northwestern France in 911 AD by Charles the Simple, King of France. Charles hoped that Rollo would defend his new land, barring the length of the Seine River to other Viking groups. Rollo remained faithful to Charles and he and his son quickly expanded the original land grant at the expense of neighboring French lords and guarded it well against Viking rivals. Even before Rollo's grandson, Richard, took over the domain in 942, the descendants of the Vikings had accepted Christianity, intermarried with the local population and adopted the French language. Already they were being called Normans, a contraction of Northmen, and there territory became known as Normandie.

"Robert I" was the Viking who established the Norse men in Franceand th
us created "Normandy." His descendants include many of William the Conquer
or's companions who were to become major landholders in England. Thus t
he families here are anchored on both sides of the Channel. Note the numb
er of instances where "see above" is noted it shows how many times this ch
art "collapses," or doubles upon itself, through the marriage of two who s
hare ancestry. It is striking how this Scandinavian bloodline ran to so ma
ny later kings and counts.
The account Jean Mabire gives of Rolf (Rollo) runs like this: Rolf, s
on of jarl Ragnwald of Alesund in Norway (whom Harald had sent to hold t
he Orkney & Shetland islands) led the life of a roaming Viking, raiding t
heFrench coast with his band. Problem was that at home he carried on t
he same way, still pillaging; he was stormy and battle-prone; and got hims
elf banned from Norway. Seems everyone else who had a problem with authori
ty joined his fleet, spent a winter in England, went on to Zeeland and fin
ally wandered on into the Seine.
The people of Rouen negotiated with him to be their protector. There had a
lready been Norwegian and Danish settlers in the area. King Charles "the S
imple" of France made an effort to chase away the Vikings, but Rolf's m
en triumphed at Pont-de-l'Arche, then went on to raid Melun, where the Fre
nch again tried to beat them off and lost. So the Vikings ruled the area f
rom their seat at Rouen, and mostly turned to colonization instead of pill
aging. But Rolf looked beyond the Seine valley; he extended his holdings a
cross the Risle, then the Orne, then took Bayeux in 900, killing Count Bér
eanger who had held it; Rolf married the count's daughter Popa. And, final
ly, in 911, Charles "the Simple" recognized Rolf's holdings.I've seen Rolf
's birthplace as Norway and as Denmark, and seen his father, the
jarl, identified variously - but usually as Mabire does. The town of Fak
se in Denmark (southern Sjælland) claims him as a local resident befo
