Crouchback
Edmund Plantegenet by name Crouchback (b. Jan. 16, 1245, London, England - d. c.\June 5, 1296, Bayonne, France), fourth (but second surviving) son of King Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence, who founded the house of Lancaster. At the age 10, Edmund was invested by Pope Innocent IV with the kingdom of Sicily (April 1255) , as an expression of his conflict with the Holy Roman emperor, who held Sicily; but Edmund was never more than an absentee titular king, and Pope Alexander IV canceled the grant (December 1258). In 1265 Edmund received the earldom of Leicester, and two years later was created Earl of Lancaster. He joined the crusade of his elder brother, the Lord Edward (1271-1272); and Edward on his accession as King Edward I, found in Edmund a loyal supporter. In 1275, two years after the death of his first wife, Edmund married Blanche of Artois, the widow of Henry III of Navarre and Champagne, and assumed the title Count Palatine of Champagne and Brie. When the court of King Philip IV of France pronounced that the king of England had forfeited Gascony, Edmund renounced his homage to Philip and withdrew with his wife to England. He was appointed lieutenant of Gascony in 1296but died in the same year, leaving his Son Thomas to succeed him in his English possession. Edmund's nickname "Crouchback" (meaning "Crossback," or crusader) was misinterpreted, probably intentionally, by his direct descendant. King Henry IV, who, in claiming the throne (1399), asserted that Edmund had really been Henry III's eldest son but had been disinherited as a hunchback.

1278 - Edward I and Queen Eleanor of Castille visit Glastonbury
Abbey to officially reinter the remains of Arthur and Guinevere
in the new abbey church. King Arthur's cross is placed on top of
the black marble tomb. Edward proclaims his son, Edward of
Caernarvon, Prince of Wales, and positions himself as the
legitimate successor of Arthur. Edward kings of England.
Edward I, 1239-1307 (r.1272-1307), was the son and successor of
HENRY III. He gained new claims to France through his marriage
(1254) to Eleanor of Castile and was responsible for his
father's victory in the BARONS' WAR. As king, his conquest of
Wales (1277-82) was followed by a long, futile campaign against
Scotland (1290-1307). Edward's legal reforms, notably the
statutes of WESTMINSTER, earned him the title English Justinian.
He restricted private and church courts and controlled land
grants to thechurch. His Model Parliament (1295) marked greater
participation by the barons, merchants, and clergy whose
resistance to war taxation had forced him to confirm previous
charters (e.g., MAGNA CARTA). His son, Edward II, 1284-1327
(r.1307-27), was a weak king, dissipated and self-indulgent. His
reign was notedfor internal dissension and the loss of
Scotland. His insistence on having his favorite, Piers Gaveston,
at court caused rebellion among the barons, who eventually had
Gaveston killed. Edward's later favorites, Hugh le Despenser and
his son, virtually ruled England (1322-26). They made a truce
with ROBERT I and recognized him as king of Scotland. Edward's
wife, Queen ISABELLA, refused to return from France while the
Despensers ruled. She entered into an adulterous alliance with
Roger de MORTIMER and invaded England. The Despensers were
executed and Edward forced to abdicate. He was imprisoned and
almost certainly murdered by henchmen of Isabella and Mortimer.
His son, Edward III, 1312-77 (r.1327-77), was dominated by
Isabella and Mortimer until he seized power in a coup in 1330,
putting Mortimer to death and forcing his mother into
retirement. He supported Edward de BALIOL against the young
Scottish king DAVID II, but despite his victory at Halidon Hill
in 1333, the Scottish question remained unsettled. In 1337 the
HUNDRED YEARS WAR began; it would dominate Edward's reign. He
and his son EDWARD THE BLACK PRINCE took an active part in the
war, the first phase of which ended with the treaty of London in
1359. The war was renewed after various treaties and truces,
but, like the Scottish wars, was inconclusive in Edward's reign.
There were many constitutional developments in Edward's long
reign. The most important of these was the emergence of Commons
as adistinct and powerful group in PARLIAMENT. The king's
constant need for moneyfor his wars enabled Commons to assert
its power to consent to all lay taxation. The Black Death (see
PLAGUE) decimated the population, producing a labor shortage
that enabled the lower classes to demand higher wages and social
advancement. Edward quarreled with the church, and the resulting
religious unrest found a spokesman in John WYCLIF. There was
rivalry between a court party headed by Edward's son JOHN OF
GAUNT and the parliamentary party, headed by the Black Prince.
Edward was succeeded by RICHARD II. Edward IV, 1442-83, son of
Richard, duke of York, became king (1461-70, 1471-83) as leader
of the York party (see ROSES, WARS OF THE) after his defeat of
the Lancastrians and capture ofHENRY VI. Edward's marriage to
Elizabeth WOODVILLE (1464) and his favoritism to her family
angered his cousin Richard Neville, earl of Warwick, who
rebelled and fled to France, where he formed an alliance with
MARGARET OF ANJOU, wife of the deposed Henry VI. They returned
to Engla

WESTMINSTER ABBEY, LONDON It is hard to imagine Westminster at
the time of the Conquest, when it occupied an island site amid
the marshes that flanked theThames. Since William the
Conqueror recieved the English crown here on Christmas Day 1066,
coronations have always been conducted in Westminster Abbey. An
earlier Saxon monastery was completely destroye by the Danes
during the eighth century. Wesminster's history as a
Benedictine house dates to its foundation by St. Dunstan in 959,
although it was Edward the Confessor who establishedits status
as the royal church of england following its consecration on 28
December 1065, just one week before his death. Henry III was
largely responsible for building the magnificent abbey church
that stands today, work on which began in 1245, favouring the
French Gothic style, which placed greater emphasis on height
than the particular English interpretation that had evolved by
then. Flying buttresses were used as a means of supporting the
height of French cathedrals, a technique deemed visually ugly by
English builders, who preferred to restrict the height and use
internal methods of support. Work on the new church advanced
rapidly, and it was reopened in 1269. Although much of the nave
was not completed until well over a century later, fortnately
the architect was content to follow the style of his
predeccessor, thereby maintaining thevisual continuity.
Westminster Abbey is not merely a church of unsurpassed beauty
it is also the last resting place of English monarchs - from
Henry III in 1272 to George III in 1820. Without doubt, the
abbey's subline architecturalachievement is the Henry VII
chapel, originally founded byt eh monarch early in the sixteenth
century with the intention of crating a shrine to Henry VI.
This plan never came to fruition and so the masterpiece of royal
mason Robert Vertue was adopted by its instigator for himself
and his queen, Elizabeth. Thefan-vaulted ceiling is elaborately
decorated with the most complex tracery imaginable, the finest
example of that art form in England. Almost ever square ich of
the chapel seems to be adorned with some form of intricate
decoration and, although the overall effect can be almost
overwhelming, it remains a quite breathtaking piece of work.
The royal tomb in the chapel is the work of a Florentine
contemporary of Michelangelo, sculptor Pietro Torrigiano, who
was commisssioned to create the most moving, gilt-bronzed
effigies of Henry and Elizabeth. However, kings and queens are
not the only ones celebrated in death; the abbey houses the
Grave to the Unknown Soldier, a nation's tribute to those slain
during the First World War. Famous names from the art,
literature and science mingle with numberous outrageously
ostentatious memorials erected to members of the nobility.

WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL, WINCHESTER, HAMPSHIRE Winchester Cathedral
is the second longest in Europe after St. Peter's in Rome, a
fact one would readily dispute based on external assessment
alone, as the building somhow fails to crate an impression of
great length. As soon as one enters the soaring,
fourteenth-century. Perpendicular nave, however, such doubts
are dispelled and the church seems to stretch to infinity beyond
the choir screen, certainly appearing even longer than its
actual 556 feet. Work on the present church began in 1079 under
the direction of Bishop Walkelin to replace the huge Saxon
foundation of Old Minster that housed the relics of St. Swithun,
a ninth-century bishop whose name is forever associated with wet
English summers. A shrine was eventually erected
The Archbishop (Edmund Rich) was canonised after his death, and
St. Edmund Hall at Oxford is named after him.@S1199@pg 15

Arundel Castle (West Sussex)
Started in the reign of EDWARD THE CONFESSOR but completed by
Robert de Montgomery (1086), first earl of Arundel, who was
granted the lands by WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR. It was captured in
1102 by HENRY I, who granted the castle to William d'Albini,
whose descendants, the dukes of Norfolk, still hold the castle.
Albini gave refuge to the Empress MATILDA (1139) when it was
besieged again by STEPHEN. Matilda's son, HENRY II, further
extended the castle. HENRY IV married Mary de Bohun here
(1380). It was severely damaged during the Civil War (1643) but
was extensively restored in the 18th and 19th C, with additional
furnishing for the visit of VICTORIA and Albert (1846).

Henry II (5 March 1133 – 6 July 1189) ruled as Count of Anjou, Duke of Nor
mandy, and as King of England (1154–1189) and, at various times, controll
ed parts of Wales, Scotland, eastern Ireland, and western France. His sobr
iquets include "Curt Mantle" (because of the practical short cloaks he wor
e), "Fitz Empress," and sometimes "The Lion of Justice," whichhad also ap
plied to his grandfather Henry I. He ranks as the first of the Plantagen
et or Angevin Kings.
Following the disputed reign of King Stephen, Henry's reign saw efficie
nt consolidation. Henry II has acquired a reputation as one of England's g
reatest medieval kings.
He was born on 5 March , 1133, at Le Mans to the Empress Matilda and her s
econd husband, Geoffrey the Fair, Count of Anjou. Brought up in Anjo
u, he visited England in 1149 to help his mother in her disputed cla
im to the English throne.
Prior to coming to the throne he already controlled Normandy and Anj
ou on the continent; his marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine on May 18, 11
52 added her holdings to his, including Touraine, Aquitaine, and Gascon
y. He thus effectively became more powerful than the king of France — wi
th an empire (the Angevin Empire) that stretched from the Solway Firth alm
ost to the Mediterranean and from the Somme to the Pyrenees. As king, he w
ould make Ireland a part of his vast domain. He also maintained lively com
munication with the Emperor of Byzantium Manuel I Comnenus.
In August 1152, Henry, previously occupied in fighting Eleanor's ex-husba
nd Louis VII of France and his allies, rushed back to her, and they spe
nt severalmonths together. Around the end of November 1152 they parted: H
enry went to spend some weeks with his mother and then sailed for Englan
d, arriving on 6 January 1153. Some historians believe that the couple's f
irst child, William, Count of Poitiers, was born in 1153.
During Stephen's reign the barons had subverted the state of affairs to un
dermine the monarch's grip on the realm; Henry II saw it as his first ta
sk to reverse this shift in power. For example, Henry had castles which t
he barons had built without authorisation during Stephen's reign torn dow
n, and scutage, a fee paid by vassals in lieu of militaryservice, beca
me by 1159 a central feature of the king's military system. Record keepi
ng improved dramatically in order to streamline this taxation.
Henry II established courts in various parts of England, and first institu
ted theroyal practice of granting magistrates the power to render legal d
ecisions on a wide range of civil matters in the name of the Crown. His re
ign saw the production of the first written legal textbook, providing t
he basis of today's"Common Law".
By the Assize of Clarendon (1166), trial by jury became the norm. Since t
he Norman Conquest jury trials had been largely replaced by trial by orde
al and "wager of battel" (which English law did not abolish until 1819). P
rovision of justice and landed security was further toughened in 1176 wi
th the Assize of Northampton, a build on the earlier agreements at Clarend
on.This reform proved one of Henry's major contributions to the social hi
story of England. As a consequence of the improvements in the legal syste
m, the power of church courts waned. The church, not unnaturally, oppos
ed this and found its most vehement spokesman in Thomas Becket, the Archbi
shop of Canterbury, formerly a close friend of Henry's and his Chancello
r. Henry had appointed Becket to the archbishopric precisely because he wa
nted to avoid conflict.
The conflict with Becket effectively began with a dispute over whether t
he secular courts could try clergy who had committed a secular offence. He
nry attempted to subdue Becket and his fellow churchmen by making them swe
ar to obey the "customs of the realm", but controversy ensued over what co
nstituted these customs, and the church proved reluctant to submit

John, King of England 1167-1216, king of England (1199-1216);
youngest son of HENRY II. After his brother RICHARD I left on
the Third CRUSADE, John conspired unsuccessfully with PHILIP II
of France to supplant Richard as king. On Richard's death, John
ascended the throne to the exclusion of his nephew ARTHUR I of
Brittany, who, with the aid of Philip II, began a revolt in
France. Although Arthur was captured (1202), John lost many of
his French possessions to Philip. John's refusal to accept a new
archbishopof Canterbury led to his excommunication (1209). To
regain papal favor, he surrendered (1213) his kingdom to Pope
INNOCENT III, and received it back as a papal fief. In England
his abuse of feudal custom in raising money aroused intense
opposition from the barons. They rebelled in 1215 and compelled
John to set his seal to the MAGNA CARTA. He was succeeded by his
son HENRY III.

1 NAME Richard /Plantagenet/ 1 DEAT 2 PLAC Cornwall, England
Richard was very wealthy and used it to be elected Holy Roman Emperor. His reign was not of any substance-pretty much symbolic. Late in life he gave up hope of ever actually ruling.
------------------------------------------
Richard, Count of Poitou by 18 Aug 1225 (renounced c Dec 1243), 1st Earl of Cornwall, so styled from 21 Aug 1227 and King of the Romans (ie. heir presumptive to the Holy Roman Empire), so elected at Frankfurt 13 Jan 1256/7 and crowned at Aachen 17 May 1257 but soon ejected and returned to England, three of the Electors apparently having thrown him over because his monetary inducements to them were too small, PC (1253); Constable of Wallingford Castle 1216; knighted Feb 1224/5 and granted by his brother Henry III 13 Feb 1224/5 the County of Cornwall during the King's pleasure, following which he was presumably invested as Earl of that county; Lt of Guienne 1226-7; Ambassador to Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II 1237 and Popes Innocent IV and Alexander IV 1250 and 1259 respectively; went on Crusade 1240-41; Co- or sole Regent during his brother Henry III's campaigns in Gascony 1253-54, fought with his brother Henry III against Simon de Montfort's barons at Battle of Lewes 1264, where he was captured; married 1st 30 March 1230/1 Isabel, 3rd daughter of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke and widow of Gilbert de Clare, 5th Earl of Hertford and 2nd Earl of Gloucester, and had three sons (all died young or sp); married 2nd 22 Nov 1243 Sancha, sister of his brother Henry III's wife Eleanor and 3rd daughter and coheir of Raymond Berengar V, Count of Provence, and by her had two or three sons (also died young or sp, including the 2nd and last Earl of Cornwall); married 3rd 16 June 1269 Beatrice, 2nd daughter of Walram de Fauquemont (or Valkenberg, near Mastricht), Seigneur de Montjoie and brother of Engelbert Archbishop of Cologne, and died 2 April 1272, leaving by Jeanne de Valletort, and illegitimate son. þ Richard, King or Richard Lion-Heart, 1157-99 (r.1189-99), was
duke of Aquitaine from 1172 and fought against his father, HENRY
II, and later against his brothers. As king, he set out (1190)
on the Third CRUSADE with PHILIP II of France andstormed the
city of Acre. Richard concluded a treaty with SALADIN permitting
Christians to visit the holy places of Jerusalem. On his return,
he was captured (1192) and became the prisoner of Holy Roman
Emperor HENRY VI. Henry exacted from Richard a huge ransom and
recognition of England's status as a fief ofthe Empire.
Released in 1194, Richard returned briefly to England. He was
killed in a minor battle in France. Although he was seldom in
England, Richard'smilitary prowess made him a central figure in
English romance. Richard II, 1367-1400 (r.1377-99), was the son
of EDWARD THE BLACK PRINCE. He succeeded his grandfather EDWARD
III. His minority was dominated by rival nobles, notably his
uncle JOHN OF GAUNT. Richard quelled (1381) the Peasants' Revolt
of Wat TYLER and after 1382 began to assert his rule, but met
with opposition from the nobles. In 1388 his uncle Thomas of
Woodstock, duke of Gloucester, the duke of Hereford, and others
forced Richard to dismiss his favorites, but the king soon
reasserted his authority. He had Gloucester murdered (1397), but
Hereford, banished in 1398, returned (1399), forced Richard to
abdicate, and was crownedHENRY IV. Richard died a prisoner at
Pontefract Castle, probably violently. Richard III, 1452-85
(r.1483-85), was a younger brother of EDWARD IV. He gained
control of his 12-year-old nephew EDWARD V, and had himself
proclaimed king.Young Edward and his brother were imprisoned
and murdered, probably on Richard's orders. In 1485 Henry Tudor,
a claimant to the English throne, landed in Wales, defeated and
killed Richard at the battle of Bosworth Field, and ascended the
throne as HENRY VII. Richard was the last of the Yorkist kings,
and hisdeath ended the Wars of the ROSES.
